How To Make Paper

How to make paper with step by step instructions and photo's. This is a great way to recycle paper, in this tutorial I have used old newspapers but you can use any waste paper.
Old envelopes, junk mail or old bills can be recycled to make your own homemade paper.

You can add all sorts of things to your paper to decorate it. Try pressed flowers or glitter.

You don't need lots of expensive equipment if you don't have a deckle you can make your own using an old picture frame. Scroll down a little to find out how you can make your own.

Materials and Equipment

  • 2 buckets
  • Straining cloth
  • Elastic
  • Deckle
  • Fine mesh
  • Sponge
  • Small bowl
  • Kitchen bowl large enough to fit your deckle in.
  • Blender
  • Towel
  • Paper towels
  • Rolling pin
  • Newspaper/waste paper
  • Flower press(optional)

The Deckle

A deckle is a two part frame with a piece of wire mesh fixed to one side as you can see in the photo

The deckle make it easier to remove the paper from the mesh but it's not absolutely necessary.

Attach the wire mesh to an old picture frame securely and then use it as a deckle.

As you cannot take it apart you will have to squeeze the water out through the mesh with the frame in place.

Fold a towel so it fit's inside the frame then turn the frame over so the paper transfers to the towel.

Mia's Top Tip

You will need to make sure your piece of straining cloth is large enough to fit over the top of one of your buckets.

The elastic should fit tightly around the bucket to hold the straining cloth in place.

Fold your towel and place it next to the bowl so you can move the deckle from bowl to towel quickly.

How To Make Paper Tutorial

Tear your newspaper into strips.

Half fill a bucket with warm water.

Tear each strip into smaller pieces and put them into the bucket.

Try to separate the pieces as you place them in the water so that they don't clump together.

Use a blender to break up the wet paper.

The paper will clog the blade to start with so blend in short bursts.

When cleaning the paper away from the blade it is advisable to turn it off at the main power supply.

The blades are sharp and can easily cut off fingers.

Make sure your hands are dry before switching it off at the power supply.

The pulp is done when the water looks cloudy and you can see no large pieces of paper.

Place the mesh over the top of the other bucket and secure with the elastic

Pour the pulp onto the mesh a little at a time.

Let most of the water drain through the mesh into the bucket.

Once most of the water has strained through the cloth move the remaining pulp into a bowl and repeat the process until all the pulp is used up.

You do not have to worry about squeezing out any excess water as we will be adding more water soon.

The reason to strain it at all is that we used a lot of water to create the pulp and will not need so much when creating the paper.

Add a little bit of water to the pulp so it has he consistency of porridge.
