Mia’s Jewelry Making Tips

Our jewelry making tips will show you the best way to use jump rings. These are wire rings that have one opening, they come in a variety of sizes and colors.

Jump ring are inexpensive but you can make your own by wrapping wire around round nose pliers. They have many uses in making jewelry, from joining clasps to a necklace or making sure your pendant lays straight.

Materials and Equipment

• Jump rings
• Flat nose or general purpose pliers - some jump rings can be opened by hand or using a pair of pliers and your fingers. Some of the larger or thicker ones will need two pairs of pliers.
  
  

Mia’s Top Tip

Jump rings are used a lot in bead crafts from attaching clasps or pendants to joining lengths of chain or wired beads together. The diagrams below show just a few craft ideas for using jump rings.

Tutorial

Always open jump rings sideways, pulling the ends apart will distort the shape of the ring and weaken it.

Use the pliers to open the ring just enough to attach to the link of whatever you are joining together.

Slip your clasp or whatever it is you are using on to the jump ring.

Gently close using the pliers making sure the ends are closed tightly.
