How To Make Polymer Beads

Learn how to make your own polymer beads with these easy to follow polymer clay tutorials. These four tutorials will show you how to make round and tube shaped beads.

It is a good idea to read through all the tutorials in this series before starting the project. This will give you a better idea of what you need to do in order to adapt the instructions for your own projects.

Once baked these beads can be used in any jewelry making or beading project.  You can change the colors and the size of the beads to suit your finished project. The first 10 steps are the same for both the round beads and the tube shaped beads.

Materials and Equipment

  • Equal amounts of polymer clay in 3 different colors
  • Rolling pin
  • Large needle or cocktail stick
  • Cutting blade or knife
  • An oven

Polymer clay needs to be conditioned before using. You can do this by kneading the clay well until it is soft and pliable. You can speed up the process by putting the clay through the rollers of a pasta machine.

Mia’s Top Tip

You can just make a collection of polymer beads and then decide what to make with after you have finished.

If you have a particular project in mind you can make the beads exactly as you need them for the project.

Polymer clay does not shrink or warp when baked if you follow the manufacturers instructions.

How To Make Polymer Beads Tutorial

Soften your clay and shape into 3 balls.

Roll out each ball of clay as in the photo.

The actual thickness of the clay doesn't matter as long as all 3 discs are about the same size.

Stack the discs on top of each other as in the photo.

Roll them out again until the discs are approx 0.25cm (1/8").

Start at one edge and carefully roll the disc to create a log.
