Mia’s Halloween witch hat has easy to follow instructions and a free downloadable template. This is a very simple witch hat with a circle for the brim and a cone for the body of the hat.
Both the templates only show half of the required shape, you will need to cut the template out of a piece of thin card or paper.
Fold your card in half making sure it is big enough for the pattern.
Print out the template and fix it to your folded card with paper clips, check you have the folded edge in the right place.
If you are making the hat for an older child or adult you may need to adjust the template to make it bigger.
An old black dress makes a great witches costume, make sure it is old and no longer wanted.
Cut large inverted 'v''s from the bottom of the dress for a ragged appearance.
An old black Skirt will make a lovely cloak, cut the skirt straight from the waistband to the bottom.
If the skirt has a button and button hole then cut down from there so the button is on one side and the button hole is on the other.
You can then use the button to fasten it around your neck. If not then you would need to sew some ribbon on each side to fasten it.
Most printers will allow you to print directly on to thin card. If you are using patterned card make sure that you print on the plain side. If your printer will only allow you to print on paper then there are a couple of different ways to transfer the template to card.
One way is to glue the paper template to the card you can use any type of glue suitable for paper. Spread the glue thinly across the card then lower the paper on top. Smooth out carefully removing any air bubbles. Make sure the glue is completely dry before cutting.
The other way will only work if you are printing a template that is easy to reproduce. Secure the paper to the card with tape, using a pencil and
ruler if drawing straight lines, go over the lines on the template. Press hard enough to mark the
card but not so hard you make holes in the paper.
Cut the template out of the card and open up to reveal the full shape.
Now using your full shaped template draw around it on your black paper or card and cut it out.
Doing it this way means you don't have any crease marks on your finished hat.
Fold the tab under and find the center of the straight edge.
Roll carefully from the center point to make a cone. Secure with a paper clip.
Fold the tabs up on the inside of the brim.
Make sure the cone fits snugly inside the brim.
Once you have a snug fit glue the cone shape using the tab on one side.
Glue all the tabs on the brim to the inside of the cone.
You can use the same design to make a wizards hat.
The stars and moons will look great on a dark blue background.
Make just the cone in light colored card or paper.
Add a ribbon from the top to make a princess hat.
Make smaller cones to hold sweets in for your Halloween Party.
