Paper beads are quick and easy to make with this step by step tutorial and photo's. I have also included two free bead templates for you to download.
Making your own beads is a great recycling craft as you can use left over strips of decorative paper from other projects.
You can make them in different shapes and sizes. You can use patterned paper or paint them after they are made.
Once finished they are quite tough and you can varnish them to make them even tougher.
They can be used just like other beads in any of your other craft projects and they make great jewelry.
You can use my decorative printer paper for this project. The link will open in a new window so you won't lose this page.
Download and print the pattern on one side of the paper. Turn the paper over and print the template on the other side.
When cutting the beads out of the template cut away all of the black lines.
This is definitely a good idea if you are using thin paper as the black lines can show through.
• Thin metal bar or knitting needle to roll the beads around
• PVA glue
• Varnish (optional)
To make the beads you just want to use the patterned paper with no white bits around the edges.
Cut away all the excess paper so you are left with just the patterned area.
Turn the paper over and cut along the lines.
If you are using thin paper it's a good idea to cut away all the black lines so they don't show through the paper.
Place one end of the strip on your rolling tool, if you are using tapered paper start with the wider end.
Carefully roll around your tool keeping the tension tight and the paper centered.
Keeping the tension apply a little bit of glue to the tip of the paper.
Finish rolling the bead holding the end in place for a few seconds until it sticks.
Use a sharp knife to trim the edges if necessary.
Your bead is done you can varnish them if you want or leave them as they are.
You can use your beads to make a pretty bracelet like the one in the photo.
Thread the beads onto a piece of cord, I have used an overhand knot between each bead.
Add a clasp and you have a cheap and cheerful bracelet that looks great.
