Polymer Clay Projects

These polymer clay projects will show you how to make a clay cane and give you ideas on how to use the cane in other projects.

These canes are quite tricky but once you have got the idea you will be able to create your own designs.

The delicate pattern running through the center of the cane is created by using different shaped logs of clay joined together and rolled into one larger cane.

Mia's Top Tip

When making the cane smaller take care not to twist or distort the pattern.

Gently squash the cane in your hands and use your fingers to stretch it out a little before rolling.

It is always a good idea to read through all of the instructions before you start a project.

As this is quite a tricky project it will give you a better idea of what you are doing if you read through the entire tutorial first.

Conditioning The Clay

Polymer clay needs to be conditioned before using. You can do this by kneading the clay well until it is soft and pliable. You can speed up the process by putting the clay through the rollers of a pasta machine. For more information go to conditioning polymer clay. Polymer Clay Projects Tutorial

Roll out 3 logs of white clay so they are equal in length and diameter.

Pinch all along one edge so the log looks like a tear drop shape from the end.

See Step 7 to get a better idea of what your logs should look like.

Repeat the process with the yellow clay though you only need two logs not three.

Roll out a piece of blue clay and trim the long end so it has a straight edge.

Place one of the 2 yellow logs on the blue clay as in the photo.

The pinched edge should be along the edge of the blue clay.

Wrap the blue clay around the yellow log so it almost covers it.

Trim the edge leaving just the pinched edge of the yellow log uncovered.

Repeat steps 4 and 5 with the second yellow log.

Place the blue logs in between the white logs as shown in the photo so the form a semi-circle.

Trim away the excess clay from the ends.

The photo shows what your logs should look like from the end.
