Valentine box ideas with a free heart template for you to download. This gorgeous heart shaped box will make your homemade gifts extra special.
This tutorial will show you how to make a basic heart shaped box with a lid. You can adapt and decorate these boxes in any way you want to.
From this one basic heart template you will be able to come up with lots of different box ideas.
These heart shape boxes are quite easy to make and older kids should have no trouble at all making them in all shapes and sizes.
You can easily adapt the template to design different Valentine boxes to make.
Draw your shape onto a piece of card and add tabs all the way around your shape.
Use the same instructions for the sides, you can work out how much card you will need for the sides by measuring around the tabs with a cloth tape measure.
You can change the height of the box by adding to the width of the paper strips. You will soon have lots of Valentine box ideas of your own.
This will make a plain box you will also need to add anything that you want to use to decorate your box with.
Most printers will allow you to print directly on to thin card. If you are using patterned card make sure that you print on the plain side. If your printer will only allow you to print on paper then there are a couple of different ways to transfer the template to card.
One way is to glue the paper template to the card you can use any type of glue suitable for paper. Spread the glue thinly across the card then lower the paper on top. Smooth out carefully removing any air bubbles. Make sure the glue is completely dry before cutting.
The other way will only work if you are printing a template that is easy to reproduce. Secure the paper to the card with tape, using a pencil and
ruler if drawing straight lines, go over the lines on the template. Press hard enough to mark the
card but not so hard you make holes in the paper.
Cut out 2 heart shapes using the Heart Template 1.
Cut out the card strips required.
Place one of the card heart shapes on a flat surface and fold all of the tabs over onto the heart shape and crease.
Release the tab and position them at a 45o angle to main shape.
Apply glue to the bottom half of one of the smaller strips of card.
Overlap the card at the point of the heart and fix all the tabs to the glued surface.
You can use household pegs to hold the card strip in place while waiting for the glue to dry.
Trim the overlapping card.
Repeat step 3 and 4 on the other half of the heart but this time glue the overlaps to the card already in place.
Glue one of the larger strips of card inside the heart over the tabs. Trim the card as in step 5.
Repeat on the other half as in step 6.
Follow steps 2 to 6 to make the lid of the box.
Now you can decorate your box in any way you wish.
Decorate your box with strips of tissue paper like the one above. Or you can use patterned card and add ribbon like the one at the top of the page.
Don't forget to decorate inside too, you can use strips of tissue or cut out a felt heart and glue it to the bottom of the box like the one on the right.
