Valentine's Card Ideas

These Valentine's card ideas will show you how to make your own homemade cards. Wear your heart on your sleeve or in this case on your card.

This is a very simple card to make that looks great. The kids will love decorating the card with crayons or stickers.

Use one of the large hearts on the free heart template below to make this pretty card.

It doesn't have to just be for Valentine's day either, it would make a great card for Mother's or Father's day.

Mia's Top Tip

Instead of using one large heart you could use 2 or 3 smaller ones down the front of the card.

The hearts don't have to be red, if your beloved has a favorite color try using that instead.

Materials and Equipment

This is what you will need to make the basic card. You may require extra materials to decorate the card such as felt pens or stickers.

  • Heart template #2
  • Card - 28cm (11") x 20cm (8")
  • Colored card for heart shape
  • scissors
  • Steel rule

Heart Template 2

You will need acrobat reader installed on your computer to view and print these designs. You can download it for free by clicking on the adobe reader button on the right.

Printing the Template

Most printers will allow you to print directly on to thin card. If you are using patterned card make sure that you print on the plain side. If your printer will only allow you to print on paper then there are a couple of different ways to transfer the template to card.

One way is to glue the paper template to the card you can use any type of glue suitable for paper. Spread the glue thinly across the card then lower the paper on top. Smooth out carefully removing any air bubbles. Make sure the glue is completely dry before cutting.

The other way will only work if you are printing a template that is easy to reproduce. Secure the paper to the card with tape, using a pencil and ruler if drawing straight lines, go over the lines on the template. Press hard enough to mark the card but not so hard you make holes in the paper.

Valentine's Card Ideas Tutorial

Cut out a large heart from Heart Templates #2 sheet.

Using the template cut out a heart shape from red card.

Now you need to fold your card into 3 sections.

Using a pencil mark off 7cm (3 3/4"), 14cm (5 1/2") and 7cm (3 3/4") on the longest sides of the card.

Score the card using a steel rule and an open pair of scissors, don't press too hard or you will cut through the card.

Open the card out and turn over so the front of the card is facing up.

Glue the half of heart shape to the flap on the right hand side, as in the photo.

Mia’s Craft Ideas

Once you have made the basic card you can easily adapt the design to change the size of the card.

You can also change the shape that you stick on the front, it looks good with a symmetrical shape but it doesn't have to be, the only limit is your imagination.
